ASK DR. SCHELLING

Dear Dr. Schelling,

Sometimes my cat won't just run forward and start playing with the wand toy I'm trying to get her interested in. Instead, she hunkers down, twitches her tail, and stares at it intently for a bit before she finally pounces. Why does she do this?

–Signed, Cats Can Be Coy
Dear Cats,

Your cat is just exhibiting her natural stalking behavior. In the wild, cats are predators, and they really know how to sneak up and get as close to prey as they can before surprising them with a pounce.

You can read all about it in this helpful article: "Why Do Cats Stalk Things?"

DEAR FANCY,

I love to talk! Do you love to talk? I just have so much to say, and I can't help but share it with my human ALL the time. I have stuff to stay in the middle of the night, too. Why does my human get so mad when I try to tell him things in the middle of the night? I mean, it's important! I just want to tell him about the funny shadow I saw or what the mailman did while he was dropping off our mail earlier or about that time my housemate jumped so high when I pounced on her from around the corner or . . .

Dear Conversationalist,

Wow, you DO have a lot to say. I'm a feline of few words, myself. But I know a lot of cats that like to talk as much as you do. You're right, the humans don't always love it when we try to chat them up in the middle of the night. I don't think you should stop talking, though: it's part of your personality!

But if your owner wants to know why you do it or how to curb the midnight chattering, he can take a look at this article: "Why Some Cats Talk A Lot."

CHEETAH CHEW CATNIP CAT TOY: This fuzzy Cheetah Chew Catnip Cat Toy is wonderful! Whether I'm chewing on it, batting at it, or just resting with it under my paws, this toy feels great on my teeth, claws, and face. Plus, it's filled with this amazing catnip that is so strong, I only have to sniff it to feel super happy and playful! It gets my paw-print of approval.

CATNIP NIP STICK: My Catnip Nip Stick is the best for when I'm feeling like grabbing, holding, and kicking my toy like crazy. It's soft and, at 6" long, it's easy to bite, carry, and kick. Then I get a taste of the top-quality catnip inside, and I'm ready to pounce, chase, run, and play until it's naptime again.

PLAY-N-SQUEAK WILD FLINGDOM: It's amazing how my humans captured this mouse and brought it home for me to hunt. And, even though I've caught it and chomped on it lots of times, it still squeaks! I'm beginning to think it might not be a real mouse after all. I don't care, though, because it feels and sounds like one, and that's all that matters.
